A common site along the coastline these days are the small inflatable boats. These can be any size from six and twenty-one feet in length and are propelled by an outboard motor. Inflatables can be used as pleasure craft, rescue boats and as ferries from ship to shore. It has been reported that The Duke of Wellington used inflatables in some of his campaigns and these may have been made of animal skins.

The appeal of the inflatable boat is the cost effectiveness and its ability to compact for easy travel and storage. When inflated the tubes have sections that are filled with air, often a PVC type tubing is used, and if a section should spring a leak you can fix it without sinking. The floors of these inflatable boats can be made of wood, steel or aluminum for sturdiness.

Inflatable boats made for speed will have an inflated keel along the hull line to improve wave cutting and turning performance. These boats are made so that they can hydroplane and therefore gain an amount of speed not possible for the type of outboard engine it is designed for. While hydroplaning, you may reach speeds of up to sixty miles per hour, or sixty miles per hour.

This type of boat can withstand a great deal of punishment from the oceans natural elements, such as water and sun damage. Once damage has set in, most people will simply replace their inflatable boat rather than repair it. Using adhering products to chemically meld the topcoat and undercoat of the PVC or Hypalon shell, making the inflatable boat as good as new, typically does repair.

The market for the general boating store can still be expensive, just not as expensive as buying a non-inflatable boat. A typical paddle boat will cost from two hundred and fifty pounds to seven hundred and fifty pounds and even more depending on the accessories you may also purchase. Inflatable kayaks and pontoon boats can be purchased for as low as thirty pounds

Some Necessary Boating Supplies

Before you set off on any nautical voyage you need to ensure that you have all the knowledge and equipment to make the journey enjoyable and safe for everyone involved. When taking the time to consider what kind of trip you would like to make, it is always necessary to take into account what supplies and items you will and may need to make the cruise a little more safe and fun, and especially with the concern of your passengers in mind.

Dependent upon the type of craft and the journey being undertaken you will need some safety equipment. For a small inshore craft or a barge this may just be simple items such as life jackets and a first aid kit. For more adventurous journeys you may need more equipment such as life rafts, a good working radio and navigation system. As the owner/skipper of your craft you need to consider all the possible eventualities before you set off on a journey and ensure that you have both the equipment and the knowledge to use it to meet the eventualities before you set off.

There are a variety of other supplies as well that can make your next outing a particularly pleasant one to be had, and most of those are for the purposes of keeping your passengers happy and worry-free. Things such as refrigerators and miniature stoves are able to keep you feeding your passengers hunger while on the motion for excitement beyond land, and stocking up on food stuffs will make your adventure worth whatever amount of time you wish to spend on the water. Hunger can always be one of the first things to take the fire out of any enjoyable cruise, but you can easily avoid this with some forethought.

Today there is a huge market for boat accessories and most of these can be found at the annual Boat Show. This is not only an excellent place to start your search for a suitable craft but also it gives you an excellent opportunity to look at all the extra equipment that is available for today’s sailor.

A final point to consider is the state of your boat. Most sailors take a great pride in their craft and will ensure that everything is in tiptop condition. This requires regular maintenance and servicing of both the structure and mechanical parts of your boat. This way can be sure that any trip that you take will be both fun and memorable for both you and you passengers

Ever since reading Jerome K Jerome’s “Three Men In A Boat” I have been captivated by the joys of boating. The scenery changes with every journey you choose to take at whether you opt for the inshore waterways or the open sea you are assured of a freedom that just cannot be found in most people’s day-to-day lives. Where you choose to go boating may be dependent upon which area of the country you live and your proximity to the open water. But whether you are an inshore boater or one who takes their boat from country to country you are assured of an exhilarating experience every time you take to the water.

Boating has, for the longest time, been considered a hobby of refinement and privilege for some, and a means of escaping the control of the masses for others, boating is a passionate interest for enthusiasts who fall either way. Whether you prefer the wind in your sails, a kayak through narrow spaces wedged in the great outdoors, or hanging out in the marina and spending time boating out along the shore. However you wish to experience this joy is up to the individual to consider, and no matter what environment is the most challenging to you, you can be assured that your experience will make you grow in ways you never expected.

Before you set sail it is important to understand that boating has its own laws, rulkes and regulations. As a boater you should show equal regard and respect for all boaters’ safety. There are a few basic rules to follow in order to ensure yours and others safety. You do need to learn these before undertaking any outing on the water, and making the effort to stay aware of these regulations will keep you and your passengers safe from harm or conflict. Not every boater, though, is as ideally cautious as every other one out on the water, but this is always changing with the differences in how the authorities regard their local bodies and passages of water.

If you are new to boating and looking for a way to begin one of the best ways is to search out the local harbours and marinas in your closest proximity, hopefully they will also be able to provide you with lessons in safety and such other important items of information if you are really starting out fresh. When considering how you want your boating experience to go, you must plan on covering as many related aspects as possible for a better awareness of the subject as a whole, and you may find that knowledge coming in quite a bit more usefully than you might have expected prior to starting to research.

Why not visit one of the many Boating centres and hire a boat first to get the feel for it

Fishing Boats For The Angler In You

Whilst some people buy boats purely for the pleasure of sailing them other have another reason for getting a boat. These are the fishermen and women who tend to mainly use boats for sea fishing. Fishing boats come in many different shapes and sizes. The smallest is the two-person pleasure boat all the way up to the largest which is an eight ton commercial fishing trawler that can carry a large crew.

The most common fishing vessel amongst amateur fishermen is the two person fishing boats. These are usually eight to twelve feet in length and made of aluminium. Although they are not large they can comfortably hold two anglers along with their fishing gear and a cooler with some drinks and snacks. Although these boats do have some form of motor, which can often be an outboard motor, they are not particularly speedy craft.

A larger fishing boat is the ten to fifteen feet general purpose fishing boat. This can comfortably accommodate four people along with all their fishing gear. These boats tend to have trolling motors and outboard motors. Included with these fibreglass boats is a built in cooler under the seats that can hold the fish you catch or your food and drinks you brought with you. The average fish caught on this type of boat is actually less than the two person boat because of the comfort level and the faster motor so people tend to get a bit lazy.

These days sea angling is becoming a very popular sport and many enthusiasts club together to buy a boat so that they can pursue their hobby. Whilst this can be a good idea and brings boat ownership into the realms of people who could not otherwise afford it there are pitfalls. It is important that the partners draw up some type of agreement showing the percentages of the boat that each owns and what should happen if one person wants to sell their shares.

It is also essential that someone takes on the responsibly for ensuring that the regular maintenance is carried out on the boat.

Boating Safety – Boat Safety Scheme (BSS)

The most important part about responsible boating is to always practice good boating safety. Most experts agree that nearly all boating accidents could have been prevented if the captain of the ship had taken a boating safety course prior to getting on the water. Boating safety is tantamount to responsible boating and it shouldn’t be taken lightly.

There’s no way we can cover all aspects of boating safety in this short article. What we can do, however, is to give you some basics to go from in your quest to become a responsible boater. There’s nothing that can replace a good, certified boating safety course taught by a qualified individual, but everyone has to start somewhere!

It is important to remember that if you take a boat on the water as the owner or person in charge you are the captain and that implies both moral and legal responsibilities. These responsibilities should not be taken lightly.

Always know the safest distance to keep away from other boats. If someone is going slower than you are and you want to pass them, know how to do so safely and with the proper signalling. Boats don’t have turn signals, but you should know how to alert the other boater you will be passing them.

When you are putting your boat in the water, be sure you know how to do this quickly as well as safely. Boating safety has to be present even before you get your vessel on the water. Knowing how to do this the right way can make the difference between friendly and unfriendly boating.

If alcohol is part of your boating trip, be sure you are very conscious of what alcohol can do to your body when you are operating a fast-moving vehicle on top of a body of water. Alcohol use by the captain should occur in moderation above everything else. Most of the boating accidents that occur today can be directly attributed to alcohol as a contributing factor. Be smart when it comes to alcohol consumption on the water.

Make sure that all people on board your boat have access to a life vest. Never let a child be in your boat without wearing a life vest at all times. The number one cause of death on the water is due to drowning. People falling overboard without a life vest on can be at considerable risk especially if they are non or weak swimmers. Therefore everyone on board should wear a life jacket. This is the number one boating safety rule stressed by all instructors.

Boating safety depends on everyone following general rules of etiquette when you are out on the water. While you can’t control what the other boaters do, you sure can control what you do. Always be polite on the water and know that you are doing your part to keep the waters safe.

Like we said previously, every boater should really take a certified boating safety course. Besides making it easier for you to get your boating license, you will be a much better boater after you take a boating safety course.

Once you have your own boat , you just need to take care of a few formalities before you’re ready to go cruising. This first thing you need to get is a Licence (registration). This will allow you to cruise on inland waterways and keep your boat on the waterway.

Almost all of Britain’s waterways are run by three main organisations, each of which issues its own licences and registrations

British Waterways runs almost all the canals, and rivers such as the Severn, Trent and Yorkshire Ouse.

The Environment Agency runs the River Thames, the River Medway, and the rivers of East Anglia.

The Broads Authority runs the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads

Similar to motor cars you will have to show evidence that you boat meets all the required safety standards and is fit for the water. You will also need to show proof of third party insurance before you can put your boat into the water.

The next problem you will have is to find somewhere to moor your boat. here are hundreds of marinas and mooring sites across Britain. Finding a mooring should be done even before you purchase your boat because until you have arranged a mooring your boat will have to stay on dry land.

Both the British Waterways and the Environment Agency have a wide range of moorings available either near locks, canals or towpaths. Another option is to consider joining a boat club. This will give you the opportunity to learn from the experiences of other members but also enjoy the convivial company and social events that are the norm within boat clubs.

In some parts of the country moorings are both in heavy demand and expensive. This is particularly true of the Southern part of the country. Normally the fees are based on the length of your boat and you really should not buy a boat until you have arranged you mooring.

One thing to remember is that you will not usually be issued with a licence unless you have a permanent mooring. However, if you have no ties (such as jobs or children at school), you can opt to cruise the canals non-stop, never staying at the same place for more than a fortnight. British Waterways has a special set of guidelines for such boaters.

Finally you will need to take out third party insurance for at least £1 million. This is to cover you against any claims made against you in respect of injury or damage from a third person.
